To celebrate the 125th anniversary of Sacred Heart Church, we are excited to announce the
reproduction of a special edition of Five Years Tour In America by Father J J Mc Glade. Sacred Heart Church is working with Jamie Curran from CIAR to bring this special edition to life, and we invite you to pre-order your copy today.
About the Book
Father J J Mc Glade, once a dedicated curate of our parish, embarked on a significant journey to North America in 1890. His mission was to raise funds for the construction of a new church in Omagh. Over five years, he traveled through Canada and the United States, visiting various communities of emigrants from Ireland and other countries. Everywhere he went, he was welcomed by parish and diocese exiles. Father Mc Glade aimed to raise $30,000 for the new Sacred Heart Church, and he returned successfully in 1895.
In 1906, Father Mc Glade published Five Years Tour In America, chronicling his remarkable journey with a focus on the people he met and the places he visited. The book highlights many local individuals who settled across the Atlantic and have family ties to this parish, as well as emigrants from areas like Dromore, Drumquin, Castlederg, Plumbridge, Strabane, and other parts of Tyrone.
This book is a vital historical document, reflecting the emigration history from our area to America and Canada.
About the 125th Anniversary Edition
We are republishing Father Mc Glade’s book as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Sacred Heart Church. This is a one-off opportunity, as we are aware of only a few original copies left in existence. This large hardback edition is priced at £25 per copy, and the cost of republication is significant.
We aim to have the book available by late October/early November, just in time for
Christmas. Due to cost constraints, this will be a limited edition.
Pre-order Information
To support this project and secure your copy, please pre-order filling out the online order form by Friday, 6 September 2024.
Pre-ordering will help us determine the number of copies to print and ensure that as many
parishioners, families, and individuals connected to Sacred Heart Church can obtain a copy.
We sincerely thank you for your support and look forward to sharing this treasured piece of our history with you.
